Need to take a break? No problem!
As long as you're in good standing with Linden Lab (i.e. not delinquent with billing or otherwise in violation of the Community Standards and Terms of Service), your Second Life account can remain inactive as a basic membership account indefinitely. This means that your avatar and inventory will continue to be stored on the Second Life servers.
If possible, please be sure that your email address is correct, up to date and verified before you take your break -- this will help protect your account so it's ready and waiting for you when you return.
Canceling an account
If you're thinking about canceling your paid membership subscription, consider leaving it active with a basic membership, which costs nothing to maintain. Should your account remain active with a basic membership, if you choose to revisit Second Life your avatar and your inventory will be here waiting for you. It's always possible to cancel a membership subscription without losing your avatar by opting to convert to a free or Basic membership level -- just be sure that your contact email is up to date, verified and correct. This will help ensure your account is recoverable in the future should you choose to return.
While we do our best to recover previously canceled accounts (and in most cases, inactive or canceled accounts can be recovered), in some instances inactive or canceled accounts may not be recoverable.
If you do decide to cancel your account:
- Log in to the Second Life website with your Second Life username and password.
- Go to the Delete Account page.
- Select a reason under the Account Deletion section.
- Click the Delete Account button at the bottom of the page.
Your account will remain open for a short time unless you hold a paid membership subscription, in which case it will remain open until your billing review date as account maintenance fees are paid in advance. On your subscription renewal date, your cancelation will complete and your account will become inactive.
Help! I changed my mind and don't want to cancel!
If you change your mind about canceling your account and your cancelation hasn't completed yet, you can halt the process by returning to the Delete Account page and selecting Cancel Cancellation. This will stop the pending cancelation from completing.
If your account is already inactive, please see Re-activating a canceled account for instructions on how to reactivate your account.
