How do I change a parcel from one group to another?

Here is a step by step guide for changing a mainland parcel's ownership from one group to another group! Please keep in mind this method should not be used exactly as it is written here for private regions, as they do not contribute to your monthly mainland tier.

Please review the Disclaimers and Considerations section prior to taking these steps.

  1. Set the group that currently owns the parcel you'd like to change as your active group.
    1. This can be done via Communicate > Groups. Right click the group in question and select Activate.
    2. While in the Communicate > Groups menu, open the correct group's profile by right clicking and select View Info, or hover and click the View Profile notecard icon on the far right.
    3. In the General tab, make sure you have the correct group title on that allows you to Deed land and buy land for group as well as Set land for sale info. If you change the title you're using, be sure to click Save. Leave the group's profile open.
  2. Reduce your group contribution in the group that currently owns the parcel.
NoteThis step is crucial in order to avoid needlessly increasing your tier.
    1. While in the group's profile, select the Land/Assets tab.
    2. In the Your Contribution box, reduce the number there by the size of the parcel you are switching ownership of. Be sure to click Save.
As a basic example, if you have 2048 square meters in group donations, and you are changing the ownership of a 512 square meter parcel, reduce your 2048 square meter contribution by 512 square meters, resulting in a new group donation of 1536 square meters.
      2048 square meters - 512 square meters = 1536 square meters.
    3. There will be a warning displayed that there are not enough land credits to support the land.  This is ok briefly, since the land is moving out of the current group.
  3. Set the parcel for sale to yourself.
Note: This step is crucial to avoid another Resident seeing and purchasing your parcel while you are trying to change ownership. Especially in popular regions, as a mainland sale can happen unexpectedly and quickly.
    1. While on the parcel in question, right click the parcel and select About Land (or go to World > About Land).
    2. In the General tab, click Sell Land.
    3. Set the price to L$0.
    4. Click the drop down under Sell the land to: and select Specific Person.
    5. In the Choose Resident box, search for yourself or click Near Me and select yourself. Click OK.
    6. Choose whether you'd like to keep ownership of the objects on the parcel or sell it with the land. This will only apply to transferrable items.
    7. Click Set Land For Sale, review the box that reviews the sale you're setting, and click OK.
  4. Set the group that you wish to own the parcel as your active group.
    1. Via Communicate > Groups. Right click the new ownership's group and select Activate.
    2. While in the Communicate > Groups menu, open the correct group's profile by right clicking and select View Info, or hover and click the View Profile notecard icon on the far right.
    3. In the General tab, make sure you have the correct group role selected that allows you to Deed land and buy land for group. If you change the title you're using, be sure to click Save.
  5. Increase your group contribution for the group you wish to own the parcel.
Note: You must take this step in order to have enough land credits in the new group. If you do not, you will get an error message or the Buy for Group option will not be available.
    1. While in the new ownership group's profile, select the Land/Assets tab.
    2. In the Your Contribution box, increase the number there by the size of the parcel you are switching ownership of. Be sure to click Save.
  6. Buy the parcel for the group.
    1. While on the parcel in question, right click the parcel and select About Land (or go to World > About Land).
    2. In the General tab, click Buy For Group. This will bypass your personal tier and place the parcel ownership directly with the new group.
    3. Review the information presented in the BUY LAND window, particularly the group you are purchasing for and your monthly land use fees. Once you are satisfied this information is correct, click Purchase.
  7. Review the parcel's new ownership and rejoice!

Disclaimers and Considerations

Permissions Requirements

In order to change a mainland parcel's ownership between groups in this manner, you must have the Deed land and buy land for group permission for both groups, as well as the Set land for sale info permission for the group you are moving the land from. You can check this in the groups' profiles under the Roles & Members tab. All group owners have this ability; however, this ability can be assigned to other, non-owner group roles.

Group Donation Bonus

Group land donations earn a 10% tier bonus to the group's land. The examples in the step by step process above only detail the basic concept to accomplish the transfer between groups, and do not take this 10% tier bonus into account.

Region Capacity and Object Returns

Groups with multiple parcels on the same region will share prims across their parcels. As such, groups with multiple parcels in the same region may allow individual parcels to be overfilled. Removing a parcel from a group's ownership will reduce that shared prim count, and may result in object returns on overfilled parcels when that shared prim count is reduced.

Please refer to Word > About Land > Objects. The Region Capacity listed here shows the total shared prim count among all parcels with that owner in the region.

To avoid object return during this process:

  • Open World > About Land > Options.
  • Make sure the Parcel Land Impact (how many prims currently on the parcel) does not exceed the Parcel Land Capacity (how many prims a parcel of that size can typically hold) for each parcel involved.

You can also join multiple bordering parcels to boost Parcel Land Capacity, and so there are fewer parcels to move to the new group!

Buy for Group is not available to me?

If the buy for group option is not available, confirm the following conditions

  1. The buyer has a group role with the Deed land and buy land for group permission.
  2. The proper group is activated.
  3. The group that is buying the land has enough land credits to claim the size being purchased.
