There are several factors that can affect your experience in Second Life. One issue that can be difficult to diagnose is Internet or Network Connection issues. While there is no official "minimum bandwidth", we generally recommend a download speed of at least 25 Mbps and an upload speed of at least 5 Mbps for a smooth experience in Second Life. However, even these speeds alone may not be sufficient to ensure a smooth experience, or even to prevent login issues. Especially if you are experiencing issues connecting to Second Life, the following tests may help determine if network or Internet issues are a factor.
The fist thing we recommend is checking your Bandwidth (internet speed). There are a number of websites you can use for this, such as fast.com, speedtest.net, or highspeedinternet.com. On some of this sites, you will need to choose to include upload as well as download tests.
The next thing to try are some network tests from your computer. For Windows computers:
- Open your Windows start menu.
- In the Search, Find, or Run window at the bottom, type CMD and hit Enter. A command prompt window will open.
- Copy and paste the following into the CMD window and hit Enter:
ping -n 10 login.agni.lindenlab.com
- Please note that the CMD window will appear to remain blank while it works on this task. When it is finished, it will output something like the following:
Copy these results and paste them into a document (Notepad is fine for this, or directly into the body of the email if you are emailing the results)
- Copy and paste the following into the CMD window and hit Enter:
tracert login.agni.lindenlab.com
- Please note that the CMD window will appear to remain blank while it works on this task. When it is finished, it will output something like the following:
- Note that it may take ten minutes (rarely longer) for this test to complete - it is not done until the "Trace complete." appears at the bottom.
- Copy these results and paste them into a document as above.
- Type: exit and hit Enter.
MacOS is slightly different:
- For macOS prior to Big Sur, using the Spotlight/search feature, locate Network Utility. If you do not have the Spotlight feature, you may be able to locate Network Utility by opening Applications > Utilities. For macOS Big Sur and later, skip to step 7 to run a traceroute test through the Terminal.
- Click Traceroute at the top of the window.
- Type the following in the network address field: login.agni.lindenlab.com
- Click Trace.
- Copy and paste the results into a text file and attach it to your reply or attach a screenshot of your results. Please be sure to include the full text.
- Click Ping at the top of the window and repeat steps 3-5.
- If you cannot locate Network Utility, you may run a Traceroute test through the Terminal:
- From the Applications folder, open the Utilities folder.
- Click Terminal.
- Type traceroute login.agni.lindenlab.com and hit Enter.
- Copy and paste the results into a text file and attach it to your reply or attach a screenshot of your results. Please be sure to include the full text.
