I want to downgrade my premium membership.

Downgrading to a different membership level

Because we offer three Premium Membership levels (Plus, Premium, and Premium Plus), you may wish to downgrade your membership to another Premium Membership level. To do so, take the following steps:

  1. Log into the Second Life website.
  2. On the lef side of the screen, select Account.
  3. In the menu that drops down, select Change Membership. 
  4. The Choose Your Membership Plan screen opens, displaying a chart of Membership plans and prices, including your current plan and it's price.
  5. Select the new Premium Membership plan you wish to hold and click the orange Choose button that lights up beneath it.
  6. Review the changes to your plan. Be sure to pay attention to the Today's charges section - this should be $0.00.
  7. Click Continue to Checkout. You will be taken back to the Choose your membership plan page. This page will now include a button to cancel your downgrade request if you change your mind and wish to continue with your current membership.

On your next billing date, you will be billed for the rate of your new membership.


Downgrading to Basic

Before one can downgrade their account, make sure to sell or abandon your land or Linden Home! 

After doing so, to downgrade any premium membership account to basic, follow these steps:

  1. Log into the Second Life website.
  2. On the lef side of the screen, select Account.
  3. In the menu that drops down, select Change Membership. 
  4. The Choose Your Membership Plan screen opens, displaying a chart of Membership plans and prices, including your current plan and it's price.
  5. To the right of Choose your membership plan, click the Downgrade to Basic membership link.
  6. Review the changes to your plan and select Continue to checkout.
  7. You will be redirected to a survey regarding your Premium Membership experience.

On your next billing date, your account will be downgraded to a Basic membership.


If you downgrade to a basic account, you will lose all the land you own, and you will no longer have access to your weekly Linden dollar stipend or live chat support.
Make sure to sell or abandon all your land before you downgrade!
You may also wish to check your group land contributions and make arrangements to keep your group's land holdings in good standing.

If you are a member of more than 42 groups, you will not lose any group memberships when you downgrade. However, you may not join any new groups with a basic account until you reduce your group memberships to fewer than 42.


You may still be charged for land

If you cancel or downgrade your account from any premium membership, you may still be charged for your current month's land holdings.

As stated on the Mainland Pricing and Fees page:

Land use fees are billed based on the peak amount of land held during your previous 30 day billing cycle.

This includes land parcels held and land tier donated to groups. Peak usage is measured by the maximum amount of land you held — for any length of time — during your billing cycle. As such you are always charged for your premium membership and the greatest amount land you owned during the current billing cycle, regardless of whether you cancelled your account before the end of the month.
